Reflecting apical complexity: An in vitro study of foramen apical localization in mandibular first and second premolars.

Introduction: Knowledge of the location of the apical foramina of each of the dental groups is an important aspect that, together with other clinical aspects, contributes to obtaining a better result in endodontic procedures. However, since there are anatomical variations, a correct diagnostic evaluation of each particular case is important in order to facilitate the therapeutic approach and obturation of the root canal system. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the location of the apical foramen in permanent lower premolars. Methods and Materials: Applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a pre-series file type K# 10 (Dentsply, Maillefer) was placed on the selected teeth, then all the samples were positioned in a controlled and standardized manner for the corresponding photographic record, with the photographs obtained through the image stacking technique, a circular grid was inserted with nine identified positions to identify the location of the apical foramen. Conclusions: The location of the apical foramen in mandibular premolars was presented in the central portion of the apex, as for the foramina, these did not present a high prevalence, and the apical foramina, in their great majority only presented one.
