Abstract

Introduction: Dental aligners are a series of transparent, thermoplastic splints for sequential use that are designed using 3D technology (CAD-CAM) Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of dental aligners in extrusion, intrusion, rotation, mesio distal inclination, vestibule lingual and alignment movements. Methodology: The research is descriptive and supported by a bibliographic review, for which documents obtained from three databases were analyzed:  PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science the keywords were selected from "DECS", "MESH" and "EMTREE", using binary operators such as AND and OR, the terms used in the search were: Orthodontic appliance, tooth movements technique, accuracy, treatment, removable thermoplastic, Invisaling in different combinations. The inclusion criteria were all documents published from January 2011 to October 2021 without distinction of language, original articles, systematic reviews, randomized and non-randomized clinical trials, prospective and retrospective studies, observational studies, and literature reviews. Results: The scientific literature evaluates the precision of the movement which improved by 50% in the year 2020 indicating that intrusion movements in anterior teeth and inclination of posterior pieces have relatively predictable results which does not occur with extrusion and rotation movements, to improve the predictability of orthodontic movements it is necessary to incorporate attachments, intermaxillary elastics, interproximal wear and even mini implants because aligners alone do not achieve good movement control. Conclusions: Dental aligners are more effective and accurate for intrusion, mesio distal inclination and lingual vestibule movements, but not for rotation, extrusion and root inclination control.
