Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of the implementation of International Standard on Auditing (ISA 701) on the stock market valuation of non-financial companies listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV). Using a panel data model, the analysis compares the informational relevance of Key Audit Matters (KAM) in the pre- and post-adoption periods (2012–2023). A fixed-effects multiple linear regression was estimated under a difference-in-differences approach, after applying robustness tests and incorporating classical financial variables and macro-structural controls. The results show that the variable Post2016, which captures the entry into force of ISA 701, exhibits a positive and highly significant coefficient, evidencing a structural change in the way the market values firms following the new regulation in Mexico. Consequently, the findings validate the effectiveness of ISA 701 as a regulatory tool in emerging markets, as it enhances transparency, helps reduce information asymmetry for investors, and strengthens confidence in the independent auditor by providing a narrative window to communicate the significant risks identified during the audit process.
