The term crown lengthening refers to a surgical procedure whose purpose is to reposition or
expose a greater amount of dental structure around one or more teeth for aesthetic or restorative
purposes, through the apical repositioning of the gingival tissue with or without extraction of
alveolar bone or with cosmetic surgery. This will depend on the conditions of the oral cavity,
as well as the presence of oral pathologies, gingival biotype, crown-root relationship, dental
morphology. This literature review highlights or emphasizes the bases of crown lengthening
surgery, as well as its indications, contraindications, different techniques, devices or
instruments used to perform said surgical procedure.
