Abstract

Introduction: Malnutrition is a pathological condition that occurs when the body does not receive or cannot adequately utilize the necessary nutrients. It involves not only insufficient caloric intake but also a lack of essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, certain diseases, such as cancer, can contribute to the development of this condition. Objective: To conduct a systematic review of various randomized controlled clinical trials related to the non-pharmacological management of malnutrition in patients requiring palliative care. Methodology: Systematic review, reviewing different health databases. Keywords were used as descriptors to conduct relevant searches, which were supported by Boolean operators to optimize results. Articles were subject to certain eligibility criteria. Results: This review analyzed a total of 43 articles, of which 8 fully met all the previously designed eligibility criteria. Of these, a total of 346 patients participated in the different studies, mostly men with a mean age of approximately 60 years. The main comparative parameters analyzed were pre- and post-treatment albumin levels, protein intake, percentage of weight loss, increase in grip strength, mortality, and hospital stay. Conclusions: Most studies confirmed that the use of non-pharmacological therapies in patients with malnutrition is very useful in mitigating the effects of cancer and its treatments.
